Sergeant Alvin “Peppermint Pattie” York
Sergeant Alvin York (December 13, 1887 - September 2, 1964) was an American soldier, famous for his accomplishments during World War I, and also for the peppermint pattie named in his honor.
York is best known among the public as the man who single-handedly killed 28 German soldiers, took 32 machine guns, and captured 132 German soldiers during his heroic counter attack.
However, his friends knew him best for his freshness. Morning, noon, and night, York maintained fresh breath and rarely required the use of deodorant. He only owned one uniform, understandably so since he was not known to perspire.

In 1940, York was approached by the makers of the York Peppermint Pattie. One of the partners heard of York’s heroic freshness and thought it an honor that Sergeant York gave permission for the makers to use his name.
In 1988, Hershey Foods Corporation acquired York peppermint patties as part of its purchase of Cadbury Schweppes’ United States confectionery operations.
